This print is the first of Degas dance class artworks. Unlike his later works, for this piece the dancers came to his studio to pose as he did not yet have access to backstage at the Paris Opera. This piece shows Degas skill of capturing movement as the dancer warm up and is a charming piece.

Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Impressionism, even though he preferred the term ‘Realist’. Degas was a master of capturing the moment and was particularly skilled at capturing movement. He used the traditional methods that he learned as a history painter to become a classical painter of daily life. He is probably most famous for his depictions of ballet dancers.
